CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMS
I. REFERENCES:
Policy on Administration of Continuing Education Programs, issued by
Vice President McCorkle, July 28, 1972. Also published in University
of California Planning and Budget Manual, Chapter 8013.
II. POLICY:
A. University Extension shall be responsible for programming and
administering all continuing education programs, consistent
with University policy as enunciated in the Guidelines
Governing the Organization of University Extension.
B. Continuing education programs are defined as those educational
activities such as classes, lecture series, conferences,
workshops, seminars, short courses, correspondence courses,
community education and development programs (whether for
credit or non-credit), offered by the University of California
to other than students formally registered in the University's
degree programs or participating in intern and resident
programs. In addition, other regular campus programs as
designated by the Chancellor are included in this definition.
Specifically exempted from this policy are:
1. Regular Summer Session programs;
2. Programs designed by Agricultural Extension for which no
credit is given or fees charged;
3. Cultural events and public lectures sponsored and
administered by a campus Committee on Arts and Lectures or
its equivalent:
4. Cultural events and public lectures sponsored and
administered by a campus research or instructional unit
for which no credit is given or fees charged.
5. Meetings of learned societies hosted by instructional
units*; and
6. Non-credit training programs primarily for University
faculty, staff and students.
When campus units wish to co-sponsor continuing education
programs with University Extension, the campus Director,
University Extension, should be involved in the early planning
stages.
* Note: For the purposes of this policy, a learned society is
a formally constituted, non-profit organization composed of
members who are interested in a particular discipline (or
branch or groups of disciplines) and who are primarily
devoted to the student and advancement of knowledge in those
disciplines. Also included, for University purposes, are (1)
organizations where the primary emphasis is upon the
application of knowledge or upon professional advancement, or
(2) organizations whose major purpose is the granting of
recognition, through the extension of membership, for
achievement in any area of knowledge.
